Do dog nails scratch vinyl plank?
Dog nails can scuff or scratch vinyl plank, especially cheaper planks with thin wear layers. A thicker wear layer (about 20 mil) with a textured, matte surface resists and hides scratches much better. Keeping nails trimmed and using rugs in run zones helps a lot. Ask us to show you pet-rated samples in the showroom.
Accidents and waterproofing
Most rigid-core LVP planks are waterproof, so spills and pet accidents will not swell them. The seams and the subfloor beneath are not fully waterproof, so standing water or a leak can still cause mold or damage underneath. Wipe up water quickly and fix leaks fast. That makes LVP a strong fit for rainy Pacific Northwest entryways, kitchens and baths.
Our pet-friendly picks
- Rigid-core LVP (20 mil+ wear layer): the best all-around choice — waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy to clean.
- Waterproof laminate: if scratch resistance matters more than water, a waterproof-rated laminate is tough and quiet.
- Tile & stone: the toughest surface for big dogs, though harder and colder underfoot.
- Engineered hardwood: choose a hard species with a matte, textured finish that hides scratches, and keep nails trimmed.
Choose textured surfaces so dogs get better grip.
